Tidying the Kitchen Junk Drawer

This area of this kitchen has been a sore subject for years in our household. On the one hand I don't want items dropped on the counters as I can't cook with stuff on the counters. But on the other hand I am frustrated because all the stuff ends up dropped on this little desk area in the kitchen. Ideally this place would be clear so one could have a laptop open, write a grocery list, pay some bills, etc. but it rarely is. So after seeing this task on my to do list for several months, I finally decided to take some time to deal with it.
